The founding of the Roman Empire and Rome is very much surrounded in myth. Archaeologists have found traces of early settlements dating back to as early as 750 BC. Latin’s are believed to have settled there around 1000 BC, but the huts they lived in, did not in fact establish the city of Rome. They were farmers, herding sheep and pigs.

So how exactly did Rome become a city of such power that ruled the world? Well the city was always off to a good start. Lying close to the sea, trade routes were possible. Italy is protected by the sea to 3 sides of the country and the Alps mountain range to the north. Greek cities in the south of the country also proved to be very influential to the Romans, who learned reading, writing and even elements of their religion.
