A Roman Centurion was a leader within the roman military and usually lead a group of one hundred men, or a century. A senior centurion would command a cohort, which was a group of 800 soldiers.

The numbers within the century groups changed under various leaders, and you will read many differing versions of the number of men contained within a century. Most commonly written is a group of 80 men.

A roman centurion was distinguished from a normal roman soldier by their uniform. They would wear a sideways horse hair crest upon their helmet, and shirt of chain mail armour. Their famous red clock would also be of much superior quality than that of a normal soldier. Medals would often be displayed to show their authority.
